A Pioneering Collection: Master Drawings from the Crocker Art Museum

When: September 16 – December 11, 2011

About the show

A Pioneering Collection: Master Drawings from the Crocker Art Museum presents fifty-seven rarely seen works dating from the late 15th through the 19th centuries. The exhibition is divided into four sections on drawings from Italy, the Low Countries, France, and Central Europe. Included are key works in various materials by artists such as Vittore Carpaccio, Albrecht Dürer, Fra Bartolommeo, Federico Barocci, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony Van Dyck, François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. The exhibition showcases the variety and quality of the finest early collection of European drawings in the United States. The collection was acquired between 1869 and 1871 by forward-thinking railroad magnate Edwin Bryant Crocker, who was deeply concerned for the cultural life of the new state of California.

A Pioneering Collection: Master Drawings from the Crocker Art Museum was organized by the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California.
