About the publication
Based on Matthew Vassar's inaugural gift to the college he founded, this exhibition catalogue focuses on an extraordinary group of Hudson River School landscape paintings by artists such as Albert Bierstadt, Frederic E. Church, Thomas Cole, Jasper Cropsey, Asher Durand, and George Inness. Known as the Magoon Collection, this collection is remarkable not only for the quality and range of the works it encompasses but also as a document of mid-nineteenth century American connoisseurship and aesthetic attitudes.
Introduction by Ella M. Foshay; Curator, Sally Mills.
