About the publication
Sanford Robinson Gifford, along with Thomas Cole, Frederic E. Church, Asher B. Durand, and numerous other painters, belonged to a group of artists known as the Hudson River School. Gifford's works in this exhibition catalogue powerfully communicate the idealization of nature in America at mid-nineteenth century and the contemporaneous allure of the sights and monuments of Europe.
Preface by Karen Lucic; Catalogue by Monica Anke Koenig, Class of 1991
