When: September 12 - December 20, 2019
About the Show
In 1941 modern dancer Martha Graham observed “The only record of a dancer’s art lies in other art.” Of the many rich exchanges between dance and fine art, some of the stories best told by the collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center concern twentieth-century ballet and modern dancers whose innovations spanned Europe, Russia, and the United States. Co-organized with Miriam Mahdaviani, Vassar College Dance Department, this focused exhibition comprises more than twenty drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture by artists such as Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Seong Moy, and Barbara Morgan. Among the subjects are seminal modern dancers Loïe Fuller, Isadora Duncan, and Martha Graham.
